Both were previously implemented in terms of `assq` and `memq`, respectively. ## 0.34.0 - January 2, 2022 Features - Separate include/library search directory options from "normal" compiler/linker options and place options passed via the `-COPT`/`-CLNK` command-line flags in-between. This allows overwriting the default search paths, since contrary to all other options, the search paths must be prepend for an `-I`/`-L` option to take precedence over an existing one. Bug Fixes - Prevent segmentation faults in the runtime when setting a global variable to itself. - Do not throw an error when exporting a primitive that is not defined in the current module, as built-ins are always available in any context. ## 0.33.0 - September 24, 2021 Features - Allow easier macro debugging from the REPL by using `expand`. Passing a single expression as an argument will return the expanded expression: cyclone> (expand '(when #t (+ 1 2 3))) (if #t ((lambda () (+ 1 2 3))) ) - During compilation the compiler will now call itself as a subprocess to perform Scheme-to-C compilation. This allows Cyclone to free all of those resources before calling the C compiler to generate a binary, resulting in more efficient compilation. Bug Fixes - Do not inline calls to `system` as it could result in multiple calls of the same command. ## 0.32.0 - August 16, 2021 Features - Initiate major garbage collections faster after allocating a huge object (larger than 500K). This allows the system to reclaim the memory faster and keep overall memory usage low for certain workloads. - Cyclone will no longer memoize pure functions by default. - Added build option `CYC_PTHREAD_SET_STACK_SIZE` to allow Cyclone to specify a thread stack size rather than using the OS default. This avoids the potential for a race condition which could lead to a segmentation fault. - Ensure atomic objects are properly traced by the major garbage collector. ## 0.31.0 - July 27, 2021 ### Bug Fixes #### Compiler - Properly handle vectors literals at the top level of compiled code. Previously this could lead to segmentation faults (!!) at runtime. - Fixed an off-by-one error unpacking arguments when calling a primitive as the continuation after a garbage collection. #### Base Library - Fixed `read-line` to prevent data loss when used in conjunction with other I/O functions (such as `read-char`) to read data from the same port. This was because the previous version of `read-line` used a different internal buffer than our other I/O functions. - Fixed a bug in `make-list` that consumed all available memory when passing a negative list length. - Allow a record type to contain fields that are not initialized by the constructor. - Built out `numerator` and `denominator` with code conforming to R7RS. #### SRFI 18 - Multithreading Library - Updated `thread-start!` to return the given thread object, per SRFI 18. - `thread-join!` now returns the result of the thread it was waiting on, per SRFI 18. #### C Compiler Warnings - Eliminate clang compiler warnings referencing `EOF` when building the runtime. - Updated runtime so the C compiler will no longer generate warnings regarding the string comparisons in `Cyc_st_add`. Instead we now raise a Scheme error in this case which prevents the possibility of a C segmentation violation. Thanks to Arthur Maciel for the bug report. - When allocating very large vectors the object used to fill such a vector may not be transported to the heap. This was a nasty bug that could lead to random memory corruption. Previously such exports would not be recognized by code importing the library. ## 0.21 - September 17, 2020 Features - Alex Arslan modified the Travis script to add support for FreeBSD continuous integration. - Added additional functions to `(srfi 132)`: `vector-find-median!`, `vector-find-median`, `vector-select!`, `vector-select`, and `vector-separate!`. Bug Fixes - Updated the `Dockerfile` to use a non-interactive install. This prevents build problems with the official image on DockerHub. - Improved `(scheme lazy)` to allow `force` and `make-promise` to accept an argument of any type. Improved representation of promises to more precisely differentiate them from other objects. - Updated `(scheme lazy)` such that `force` will recursively force promises. - Add type checking to record type accessor functions. We now raise an error if the passed object is of the wrong record type. - Fix issues with expanding `cond-expand` expressions in libraries. Previously there would be issues with the expansion if the code needed to be within the context of a `begin`. - Modified the reader to handle escaped intraline whitespace properly, per R7RS. ## 0.20 - August 14, 2020 Features - Added the ability to call Scheme code from C. This includes: - C function `Cyc_scm_call` which allows execution of arbitrary Scheme code, and returns objects that can be safely used by the caller. - C function `Cyc_scm_call_no_gc`. This prevent compiler errors when linking the final executable. - Added the `-CLNK` compiler option to specify a custom command to provide as a linker option. For example: `"-lcurl"`. Bug Fixes - Fixed the division (`/`) operator to ensure exact arguments will produce inexact results rather than incorrect fixnum results. The example given in R7RS is that `(/ 3 4)` must not return a mathematically incorrect result of `0`. This was previously broken in compiled code though `icyc` would return the correct result. ## 0.14 - February 11, 2020 Cyclone now automatically relocates any stack objects when performing a mutation. This prevents a whole range of race conditions that had previously been possible in multithreaded application code. And since this work is done by the Cyclone runtime no special code needs to be added to your applications. Special thanks to Daniel Mendler, whose discussions were the inspiration for these changes. Some background: There was a long-standing issue where a mutation (via `set-car!`, `vector-set!`, `set!`, etc) could allow a global object on the heap to reference objects on a thread's local stack. This is problematic because threads periodically relocate objects from their stack, and for performance reasons these objects are moved without any coordination between threads. Thus it is critical that objects on the stack are only used by the thread that owns them. In the past we provided functions such as `make-shared` that could be called from application code to guarantee safety. However, this approach is error-prone and asks too much of anyone using Cyclone for multithreaded development. The proper solution is for Cyclone to avoid this situation in the first place. Other Features - Added `CYC_HIGH_RES_TIMERS` to the runtime code to allow logging of timer information for the GC. Note this can be passed to the C compiler via the `-D` option. ## 0.12 - January 17, 2020 Features - When compiling a program with `cyclone` any library dependencies are automatically built as well. Note: - A library will only be built if an object file does not exist for it or if any of the source files are newer than the object file. - Only "local" libraries will be built. Cyclone will not automatically attempt to build libraries in system directories. - This capability can be disabled by the `-no-batch` option. - Added `define-values` from R7RS. Bug Fixes - Prevent compilation errors when optimizations are disabled via `-O0`. - The compiler now omits the continuation argument when printing the expected number of arguments to a function, to avoid confusing error messages. ## 0.11.8 - December 30, 2019 Features - Added `read-bytevector`, `read-bytevector!`, and `write-bytevector` I/O functions from R7RS. This optimization is more effective when combined with the others listed below as they collectively increase the chances that a higher-level Scheme loop may be compiled down to a single C function. These C functions can then be "called" repeatedly using a `while` loop which is more efficient at a low level than repeated function calls. - Combine lambda functions that are only called for side effects. - Improve inlining of primitives that work with immutable objects. - Eliminate functions that are only used to define local variables. Features - Added a new feature `program` to `cond-expand` that is only defined when compiling a program. This allows, for example, a `.scm` file to contain a section of code that can be used to run unit tests when the file is compiled as a program. The same file can then be used in production to import code into a library. This is similar to using the `__main__` scope in a python program. Bug Fixes - Prevent GC segmentation fault on ARM platforms (Raspberry Pi 2). ## 0.9.3 - October 1, 2018 Features - Allow pretty printing of bytevectors. - Internal change to the compiler - preserve lambda AST forms throughout compilation process. In this case we need to ensure the object is not corrupted when it is copied and that we sync the object's fields back up once the mutator is unblocked. Currently this only affects port objects in the runtime. Bug Fixes - Prevent the possibility of segmentation faults when working with large vectors. When a vector is large enough it is allocated directly on the heap, but prior to this fix it was possible that any vector elements on the stack were not moved to the heap during minor GC. This is probably the most important change in this release and allows `icyc` to be used to its full potential. - Store parameter objects in such a way that changes to a parameter object do not affect other threads that use the same parameter object.
